Things Are Happening™. In lines with my established policy of not posting specifics till they actually, you know, are confirmed, signed, and quite possibly three weeks into I'm not going to say what at this stage. But I figured the 1.7 people reading this deserved to be given a heads up that I haven't quite dropped off the side of the world yet ( Read more... )

You are 2.0 of an alien, and as such bring the total down.

There's a reason that it's a cliche.

It's because it works. Yeah, I know it's frustrating for those users with a clue when we ask it. But, and here's the big thing, not asking it can waste 2 hours of your time as we try to troubleshoot what's going on, where a 5 minute reboot would have had you up and running again.

Granted, that can also mask a recurring problem, but as soon as I hear 'I've had this problem before' that's when I'll start looking deeper into superficially trivial problems.

So, yeah, apologies for asking the obvious. We feel ridiculous asking it, if it's any consolation. And if I know the user is technically literate, I'll tend to assume that they've already done it.

If it annoys you that much, let us know you've restarted when you log the call : )

I've improved my interaction with "help desk" 1000% by doing just that - "Hi, I've got an X issue. I've already rebooted and (whatever else I've done) - but that didn't fix the issue. What's next?"

Save IT time & mine ;>.

And almost congrats on whatever it is that might be happening - it's heartening to see others connecting - makes me feel better about my chances (also looking right now) ;>.

[oh, and I'm not really here - I'm also a figment of your imagination - Left Coast Version ;>)
