sport's day
choi minho/luna
g
[in sum]: luna feels she wins something more than a medal when minho coaches her.
notes: written after finally watching the idol sports festival thing. not a pairing that occurred to me before... but luna was so cute after winning :)

sport's day

"it's all in the rhythm of your steps" minho coaches with a stare that seems to underline and bold each word he utters. "it's one two three pivot, then jump."

"well" says luna. "it sure sounds easy oppa."

luna tries to smile, but minho's looking like this is the apocalypse and only luna's gold medal in the high jump can save them all.

it's not as if the idol sports festival is the olympics. but luna's witnessed first hand how much minho likes winning medals. she grumbles internally, but decides she wants to win too.

she takes a deep breath, grinding her heels into the starting point to make sure she's got the process down.

she starts.

one
two
three
pivot
and...

the white pole drops with a clatter. and, although, luna can't see minho's face, she can hear the sigh from across the gymnasium.

"this won't do" minho says when luna doesn't get up from the mat. "let's try again."

but try as she might, luna is just not getting it.

"you're not arching your back enough" says minho and luna's just about to explode.

"do it again."

"again"

"again"

"again"

"it's not like this is the olympics!" luna finally barks.

the whole place goes silent.

luna fidgets under minho's glare. one that seems contemplative of something right now.

'oh, please don't kill me' luna thinks.

but suddenly, minho's clapping.

"that's it! ha ha! that's it luna! good job!" minho shouts. he holds a fist to his forehead and revels in the discovery like he's the "thinker" statue.

'what is he talking about?' wonders luna, but for now, she's just glad that minho's not mad.

minho runs over to her, placing a huge hand atop her head.

oddly, the sensation is cold. luna wants to duck away because she's sweating and her hair is getting matted to her face, but before she can do anything, minho's talking a mile a minute, excited.

it's the first time luna's seen minho this happy.

"you're right" minho says. "it's NOT the olympics. which means we don't have to go by the real rules."

luna tilts her head, signaling that she still doesn't understand.

"luna" says minho, suddenly serious again. "you're good at somersaults right?"

"well, not real somersaults...just..."

"yeah, flips underwater right?"

at this point, all luna can do is stand there, mouth just slightly ajar. it's a story she told a long time ago, when they first met. and really, luna had just been trying to dispell the awkwardness in having to be introduced to a tall and lanky guy who didn't speak at all...

"it'll be the same. but instead of jumping backwards, jump forward, okay? like doing a somersault in midair. but over the pole. think about swimming, diving into the mat. but don't forget what i said about rhythm."

'he remembers' is the only thing really processing through luna's head.

the oddly placed sincerity touches her and though she's hearing minho's incessant coaching, her eyes register blank.

"luna? luna? earth to luna..."

"huh?"

"i said, do you understand? seriously luna, we can't win against the other girls if you're not going to take this with all you've got..."

luna smiles for the first time in several hours.

a real smile.

"okay" she says, pressing her lips together with determination. "let's do this."

after the filming and after they eat, all of sm break up into little groups to go home.

luna's pretty energized. it had been a fun day. the idol sports festival was really just like a huge picnic outing.

before she gets into her van to go home to the rest of her teammates, she hears someone calling her name.

"luna! luna!"

there's the beating of running feet and when luna turns around, she's engulfed by a thin but sturdy chest and long skinny arms.

"good job" minho breathes into the top of luna's head.

and once again, luna wants to tear herself away. she's been sweating all day. her make-up is runny and clumpy. her hair probably smells like something died in it.

but minho pats her shoulders and fingers the gold medal she's still wearing around her neck.

"good job" minho repeats. "you were...great."

with a final squeeze on her shoulder, minho jogs back to the other shinee members. taemin waves from their own van, several meters away. and luna ends up waving back until minho reaches the door and all of them have driven off.

luna smiles to herself but it turns out lopsided and goofy.

there's a funny niggling inside her chest. and though she's elated that she's won the gold medal for the sm family, she feels as if she's just gained something more for herself.
