Why is it socially unacceptable for one guy to say to another, "You mean a lot to me; will you be my brother?" in a completely platonic manner?

Yes, I'm asking you in particular. In case you were wondering who was supposed to answer.

One theory I've heard is that the general population is slowly normalizing homosexuality, such that eventually the breakdown between genders will disappear and platonic and romantic barriers will soon cease to exist as well. As long as such expressions of platonic love among friends are rare, the idea will have homoerotic overtones. This allows homosexuals to support their claim that homosexuality is really not so rare or unnatural as some people think ( ... )

For the most part, I like sarah's explanation.
I also believe, as silly as it sounds to some people (and by gum, I want to sound silly to some people sometimes) that the world is, with all the strength it can muster, moving away from the ability of anyone to be honest and loving. Anyway, it is the role of the Christian to be socially unacceptable in this day and age, is it not? "Ye cannot serve God and mammon," so those who worship the world or who worship themselves cannot see what the Christian sees in even an expression like the one you ask about, as natural as it should be.

A friend loves at all times,
and a brother is born for adversity.

This is one of Allan's favorite verses. He explained to me what it meant. I thought it was neat and wanted to share it with you because I wanted you to know that, Ryan, you mean a lot to me. Will you be my brother?
