That movie. That damn, wonderful movie.

Heinlein is a staple of Science Fiction. One of the Grand Masters, inventor of the waterbed and the waldo, he is sacred. There are a certain number of books - about three - that old hands will toss newbies to give them a feel for Heinlein.

Being one of the gateway books into Heinlein, The Puppet Masters is a War of the Worlds era story about an ( Read more... )

I have not, to my recollection, read a Heinlein novel, nor to my knowledge have I seen a film based on his writings. That has got to change!

Thank you, you have rescued me from life as a Philistine...seriously. I will be looking for the author's name and books from now on.

Now, that's what a fantastic review is supposed to do. Bravo! Well done.

Yay for a good review!

Yes, you should absolutely remedy that immediately. If you don't like some of his more preachy stuff, definitely try his short stories and juveniles - they're all good solid sci fi.

I like Heinlein though his injection of his rather opposite to mine politics sometimes make me hold my nose briefly for a chapter or two.

I read Farnam's Freehold recently cause I found it among some books I had....I don't think too many people have read it but it was enjoyable.

Farnham's Freehold is absolutely one of my favorites. I love that he was exploring the issue of race via the arms race (okay, simplifying, but you get what I mean. :) ) Love love love that book! But I doubt I will EVER pick up bridge.

I love the Lazarus Long books but am kind of lukewarm on a lot of his others. No idea why that is since the Long books are kind of clearly more medium quality pulp and the books your mention are all first class sci-fi. I attribute it to my poor taste.

I've been sharing a lot of Bowie songs this week for obvious reasons and this is the clear choice for this entry. Not only is about movies (not just science fiction) but its used in like every movie now:

Ohhh that's a good one! I wonder what I'll get... Maybe something off his latest album because my entry is about the death of the penny and there are a lot of death-related songs : (. All I ask is that you don't give me "Let's Dance" because actually I can't stand that song and I have never liked it XD;;;. Funny because it's actually probably his biggest hit ever. Whatever it is, I'm anxiously awaiting :D

Hah Starship Troopers... I saw that in theaters when it came out. It was pretty bad, but oh so amusing. I think the Rifftrax/MST3K guys need to parody it!
