Fog and Trees, Jasper National Park of Canada, Summer 2006

I have not posted for a while, but I am finally getting into the process of editing my Summer photos, and a trickle of them will start appearing here. The first one follows, with an alternative version appearing behind the cut, so I can get your thoughts on how dark is too dark.

Before I say anything, bear in mind that my monitor might not be the best: when I adjust pics to a point where I think they look fabulous on my monitor, the color and lightness tend to be unsatisfactory for many others. So my comment might be one that you can crinkle up into a tiny little electronic ball and throw away.

That said, I like the gloomy air of mystery the picture takes on in its darker form. Being so dark as to lose ALL the foreground detail in blackness might be a bit much, though. My vote is for a teeny tad lighter than your first posted version.

The second pic feels frosty, colder. If that's what you're going for, then toss out what I said above.

I am fairly sure it is not your monitor--I dragged the black point way up to take out foreground detail; I have similar thoughts about a little more detail in the foreground--I just haven't found the right finesse point yet.

Why am I thinking of David Guterson? Wonderful stuff.

I don't know, because I have no idea who that is--but I will endeavor to find out, now that I know ;)

Although he uses a pencil, these remind me a lot of Stephen Gammell's illustrations (he's one of my favorites). I'm a fan of the top photo- there's more contrast.

While I am not familiar with Gammell yet, one of the things I did like was the somewhat painterly/ink-drawing effect of the first one.

I just looked at your journal (I never read my own profile, so I had no idea that new people had friended me until just now) and I must say that I really liked the playfulness of 'crow bar'--delightful.

Thank you! The Crowbar was so fun so make. Feel free to check out my illustration website as well.

And yeah, Gammell is great! I actually have a big tattoo of one of his pieces.
