My dad was a member of the Caterpillar Club - I even have his little gold catepillar lapel pin.

Even though paratroopers usually aren't eligible (as they jump from servicable, rather than damaged aircraft :), they made an exception in his case because during his last jump the Dakota he was flying in was hit and burning as they came over the drop zone. They didn't all get out before it blew up.

This was during Operation Varsity, the particularly nasty jump over the Rhine into Germany:

When ever I hear the Merlin roar over my home I run outside for another look. I've seen it a lot.
