1.) I always enjoy gratuitous celebrity crossovers.

2.) I miss the real Michael Jackson.

3.) I love that the screen-grab is of Lou Diamond Phillips and Billy Dee Williams.

Ok. I saw this vid for the first time three days ago.

I love Liberian Girl. Because, where the fuck did that come from?

But this video sort of destroys me in that you can't hear any of the words or get an idea what the song is about due to the absolutely mind-boggling amount of cameos, which basically says to me that the director of the film and/or MJ's agent couldn't actually bring themselves to write a story for a video, or even to have Jackson lip sync the majority of it. It's like they're saying "THIS SONG IS WRETCHED HOW BAD DO YOU THINK WE CAN BLOAT IT WITH A AND B-LIST CELEBS IN ORDER TO DISTRACT FROM THE FACT THAT WE HAVE NO PASSION FOR THIS SONG AT ALL.

Sigh.

Why does the video have to be about the lyrics? In this case the director (Spielberg by the way) is using the mood and tone of the song as his jumping off point. The slow and slightly eerie melody propels the whole "Where is Michael" mystery. Talking over the words, straying from the main theme of the song... it's something plenty of other music videos would do in the future (most notably Fat Boy Slims PRAISE YOU). This is just a reminder of how awesomely experimental Jackson let his videos get back in the day and why we have him to thank for all the David Finchers and Spike Jonses out there ( ... )

Hold on... I may have been misinformed. It looks like the video was actually directed by Jim Yukich. Yukich is best known for having directed several Cheetah Girls projects. Which we can all agree makes him just as awesome as Spielberg.

Your points are intellectucally valid, but you don't really address the emotional and truly stunning romantic content of Liberian Girl.

It could've been any song that they played this Horse and Pony game with, there's a million (a hyperbole, I do declare) slightly throw-away MJ songs that could've been the frog for Spielberg's scorpion to ride.

It didn't have to be Liberian Girl, one of his most heartfelt and underappreciated lovesongs.
