I've blogged about the election every night for nearly two months. I'll continue blogging, but perhaps not every night.

Obama won a mandate yesterday. I hope congress will basically let him do things as he thinks best, within reason. The last thing we want is a lot of committees and politicians getting involved. We have an economic collapse,  two ( Read more... )

NC is now officially in Obama's column, by a very small margin that is wide enough (the number of outstanding absentee ballots wouldn't help McCain regain the lead). Yay, Ellen's homestate went the right way, and in a big way too, with the three top offices turning blue: President, Governor, and Senator.
That's a big, big switch for the state that gave us many decades of Jesse Helms. And a sign of the mood in the nation... decency and understanding are contagious, and bleeding through the South as well as the Midwest and the Mountain West.
Oregon has now been declared blue also in the Senate race. This leaves only MN (forced recount, Franken leads by only 400-some votes) and AK (yeah, those are ornery voters). And GA has a runoff coming up in a few weeks. So, while the filibuster-proof 60 seats is a bit of a remote possibility, it's still technically achievable.

I've edited the entry to add NC to the Obama column in the "Education" state listing. I too remember the dark, embarrassing days of Jesse Helms. One small correction - Coleman actually leads Franken in MN by 342 votes: 1,211,538 - 1,211,196. There'll be a recount that might not be finalized until December; it could go either way. GA could go either way (Obama will campaign there), but Republican Stevens will probably win in Alaska, and then be forced to resign. (However, there are a lot of suspicious things about the Alaska vote, about the only place in the country where the polls were way off, both for Stevens and in other races.)

I would imagine that gun fanatics are dragging themselves about with downcast expressions, too.

Hopefully, Obama and Congress will make progress at fixing Bush's mess--and hold onto their majorities for a while.

"Jackpot World" was a good read. Asimovs' & F&SF's loss for not buying it.
