This has always been my favourite holiday! I even have a daughter born on Halloween (I distinctly remember throwing all of our Halloween candy and pumpkins at our neighbours on the way to the hospital).
Our attempt at pumpkin creativity (lets just say we were science majors not arts majors, ok?):

ETA: I should add that this is because it's set back from the road, not because I'm some neighborhood witch-hag that all the children are afraid of.

I never thought you were the witch-hag, lol, though I'm sad you don't get many kids! Our neighbourhood turned over from a lot of elderly couples to young couples with kids in the last 5-6 years, so we're seeing a lot more.

I don't think I've ever carved a pumpkin, but the last few years, some of my friends at work and I have decorated the office with carved bell peppers with tea lights inside them. They're awesome because they're all multi-coloured, so they're like shiny little lanterns everywhere.

I'm so lazy.

I love the idea of the bell peppers, especially as you'd have different colours.

We let the girls carve our pumpkins this year (eeek!) and have some very traditional jack-o-lanterns.
I was secretly happy not to have to carve through that thick skin or deal with the goo inside, LOL!

Wow, you are very brave. It's funny that it's more my older one I wouldn't trust with the knife!
A loved the goo ... she worked for hours separating the seeds from the goo so we could roast them. YUM. K went looking for rubber gloves to deal with the goo, LOL.

I haven't celebrated Halloween in years because our neighborhood is so remote and the houses are spread so far apart that trick-or-treating isn't practical. Plus we don't have street lights so it's darker than dark out here at night. The neighborhood I used to live in was like a trick-or-treating destination spot and we'd get at least a hundred kids on a good night. I'm not sure which I prefer. LOL

We've averaged 50 -70 kids, but more move into the neighbourhood all the time. My brother lives in a newer subdivision near Toronto and they get nearly 200 every year :O ... that scares even me, though I love giving out candy. I think I remember how much I loved Halloween when I was a kid, especially the peeps who let you pick your candy (I do that, too now that I'm giving it out). I also love to walk the neighbourhood once the kids have gone in to see all the jack-o-lanterns!
