Feeling a little nostalgic today. Thought it might be fun to share favourite toys that we had growing up. Which toys did you take everywhere? Play with until they fell apart? Remember fondly? Take a minute and share your top five!
Lego! I was obsessed with Lego. We went to Denmark to Legoland when I was about nine and it was the best trip ever. My niece and nephew are just graduating onto Lego now (as my nephew can now be trusted not to try to eat it), and it's great fun getting to play with it all again. I made a TARDIS and an iceberg last week ...
I had He-Man and She-Ra action figures that I loved til my sister pulled their heads off and buried them in the garden.
I had an awesome doll's house that my grandad made for me. It was 1930s style and had working lights and all kinds of cute little furniture.
I spent a lot of time making my own toys, though. Bows and arrows and quarterstaffs and camps in the woods and so on. I should have been born about forty years earlier.
We had lego, but I never really got into it. My brother made these mad huge ships with all of these "features", but I could never figure out what or how to build anything. 'Engineering just isn't my strong point, lol. I actually might have liked it more if it were in those non-creative kit forms we have now :D
My brother kept threatening to shave my Strawberry Shortcake dolls' hair. One day he took one and stuffed all her hair into her hat and told me he'd shaved her. I FREAKED! Then he had to take the hat off :).
I LOVED that He-Man castle! My brother had it and I think I played with it more than he did.
My all time favorite is the classic- LEGOS! I could build with those for hours. We actually saved all the old Legos, and it turned out that my husband did, too, so now we have two 3-drawer filing cabinets full of Legos for our boys to share. (Guess what they're doing right now?)
the one doll I enjoyed playing with was Barbies. Is there any girl who didn't learn at least a little about sex by making her Barbies have it?
And Thundercats. I can remember writing my first fanfics with Thundercats. I used to write these hideous crossovers, where the Thundercats met He-Man and maybe G.I. Joe and probably the Smurfs, and I'd write them as plays and my brother, sister, and I would record them on audio cassette. I am so grateful those things are probably all in a landfill someplace.
I had a Wonder Woman barbie doll that I really enjoyed (well, mostly lassoing all of my stuffed animals, lol.
So awesome that you were writing 'fanfic' all the way back then, and acting it out! LOVE IT. I did a bunch of Olympic interviews (wherein I interviewed either myself with a different and hideous voice as a popular athlete and a way overdone 'announcer' voice, or my family who would pretend to be athletes). My Nonno had given me this old tape recorder and microphone. They were so, so bad. I'm glad those are gone, too!
I was a very feminine child. I loved playing with Barbies, in fact I had a whole toy box full of them. My Nonna used to make me little outfits for them with whatever fabric I wanted. Though when I was about 11/12 I decided that my Barbie's needed to be edgier so I took permanent marker to their arms and legs and gave them a series of squiggly-line tattoos. I also gave a lot of them really unfortunate hair cuts. ;P
Will you still be my friend if I tell you that I had one Barbie with 5 heads? The 'set' was a hand-me-down from a neighbour. My mom didn't like Barbie so the set kinda disappeared. I love what you did with yours!!
My Wonder Woman barbie (with Diana Prince outfit) on the other hand was awesome and 'Mother' approved. I lassoed everything in sight, LOL.
I had something similar to that strawberry, and carried around all my Strawberry Shortcake dolls in it. It was a big strawberry and it had a clasp in front, and then it opened in half.
I had the She-Ra version of that castle and I loved it so much. I had a lot of the dolls, too, and my favorites were Catra (I always reserved Bow (lol that it's spelled that way) for her) and Double Trouble, because you could change her face from good to evil. The castle had an elevator and I thought it was amazing.
Another favorite was my Hotwheels playset that folded in half for easy carrying, and when open, it had a couple of levels of racetrack and another elevator.
I didn't know that She-Ra had a castle, too - that's awesome! Double Trouble also sounds like a cool figure.
We seemed to have a lot of Hot Wheels orange track and cars, but no sets. Our favourite was setting up the track so that, after a series of bumps, the cars fell down the stairs :).
I like your elevator obsession! The Greyskull elevator had a gargoyle on the pull string if I remember correctly. Thanks for sharing!
You had some badass toys! I love the guns, actually, but given my fondness for projectile weapons, that's probably not surprising. :D
My sister and I had barbies and stuffed animals and stuff as kids, but when I think of how we played most...
1. Huge elm tree in our backyard. It was a ship, a house, an escape route, a jungle gym - you name it.
2. The garden: we made potions and "perfume", cooked our toys "dinner", and had a secret cave inside the trees & bushes.
3. Lego (that never gets old).
4. Scarves & safety pins. My grandmother had a huuuge collection of varying sizes, mostly from when she lived in Asia. We used to make dresses and clothes out of them and pretend to be princesses or dancers. We even put on shows!
5. Sentimental entry: A stuffed toy turtle with a patchwork "shell" that I've had since I was a baby. He has a music box inside that plays It's a small world. :)
Ooooh, I love the sound of the scarves & safety pins! How much fun to put on performances with them!
We lived across from a large field, so there was always a baseball or soccer game going to join. My friends and I used to scavenge the top part of the forested hill on the other side for berries and plants to make witches brew out of -- way too much fun!

Thanks for the walk down memory lane!

Apparently I was into elevators.
