Here's one of my favorite excerpts of the Bible, where Ezekiel argues with the Lord that he should be allowed to eat animal feces instead of human feces like the common people (Ezekiel 4, 12 to 15)

12 Eat the food as you would a barley cake; bake it in the sight of the people, using human excrement for fuel."

13 The LORD said, "In this way the people of Israel will eat defiled food among the nations where I will drive them."

14 Then I said, "Not so, Sovereign LORD! I have never defiled myself. From my youth until now I have never eaten anything found dead or torn by wild animals. No unclean meat has ever entered my mouth."

15 "Very well," he said, "I will let you bake your bread over cow manure instead of human excrement."

How about where God has Hosea marry a prostitute. Interesting and extreme ways to speak against the moral state of Jerusalem at the time, but yeah that's amazing that Ezekiel talks God down from human to animal poop fuel.

Yeah, doesn't he let Hosea live with that prostitute for like 70 years, only to say 'See! This whore is decrepit! Do not treat the state of Jerusalem the way you have treated this whore!'

Personally, I think a lot of those prophets were on the make

No wait, in this translation, they say the feces are used for fuel. That's not the version I had read...

12 And thou shalt eat it as barley cakes, and thou shalt bake it with dung that cometh out of man, in their sight.

13 And the LORD said, Even thus shall the children of Israel eat their defiled bread among the Gentiles, whither I will drive them.

14 Then said I, Ah Lord GOD! behold, my soul hath not been polluted: for from my youth up even till now have I not eaten of that which dieth of itself, or is torn in pieces; neither came there abominable flesh into my mouth.

15 Then he said unto me, Lo, I have given thee cow's dung for man's dung, and thou shalt prepare thy bread therewith.

I do something like this with my grad aesthetics class - they give a presentation on influences, both visually apparent and thematic, and hopefully that'll help them better utilize their influences while also acknowledging a need to depart from them.

You should get some Davis B.P.R.D. stuff. Don't think of it as being a Hellboy thing; enjoy it for its own sake. I promise, you won't be dissapointed. John Arcudi's storytelling style is a lot more similar to your own that Mignola's, and I expect you'd get sucked into it as intensely as I have. Start with volume 3, and you can skip the 1940s stuff (though it, too, can be appreciated as its own thing).

There's a panel in Crogan's March that's about 99% Wes Anderson influenced - when he's falling off the wall and you see his shadow below. At least in my head it was very Anderson-influenced, so much so that I almost cut it.

It's so good, the art direction, the animation, the music, I even like the story. It's also mercifully short.

I like it lots, too! Though, I feel like they're trying to tell far too much story in only four episodes. There's enough characters and plot to sustain a long-form series, but not enough's been stripped back to fit in the movie-length space of time they've got to work with. Tries to do everything, ends up not doing enough.

Well now that you've done one...maybe I should too. I've been resisting the urge. I'll enjoy it too much for sure.

I am glad to say that I totally knew you cherished all of these. Though maybe I didn't realize you were such a big Hellboy fan?

I find it hard to consider myself a fan of many things, but I very regularly flip through Hellboy for the art and the current swing of the storyline is terrific. So it is a keeper.

Yeah I know what you mean. But I am finding I like a lot more things lately.
