ninevah and I watched the first episode with the new Doctor. I must say,
I was impressed.
This resurgence of Doctor Who has been a wholly exciting and nostalgic thing for me. I remember watching DW with my mom when I was a kid. She was gaga over Tom Baker, and so, for me, the Doctor was always Tom Baker. I actually didn't know other actors played him because when Baker went away, so did watching Doctor Who.
Not that I was old enough to remember much anyway, other than bad monster costumes, the scarf, the curly afro, and cheap sets.
Anyway, when DW was rumored to begin again, I got swept away in the nostalgic geek-mania, and it was a good thing to get swept away by. I absolutely adored Christopher Eccelston's intense, brooding, and goofy Doctor, and when David Tennant stepped into his shoes, I wasn't too sure I'd like this man who was taking over after only one season. I was pissy with Eccelston. I didn't want to like Tennant. But oh man, I fell in love with Tennant's quirky, brilliant, and reflective take. When HE announced he was leaving, I felt betrayed again! Who in the hell would they find to fill the shoes of two great actors, much less be the next in a succession of actors who are all iconic of the Doctor over the years?
Matt Smith is only 27 or so. He looks younger than that. He's an unknown. And he's Tennant's replacement. Stands to reason I'd be set to not like this guy. One thing I forget about, though, is that whoever becomes the Doctor HAS to be amazing and brilliant and quirky. The minds behind the resurgence, fans themselves of the original parade of Doctors and those adventures, would NOT let some mediocre twat flub up their baby.
Matt Smith has a new take on an old hat, yet he does seem to be channeling a smidge of Tennant (carryover, maybe, for the fans) as well as making the role over to suit his talent. Sure, it was only one episode, but like I said, if he can continue with this level of brilliance, then sign me on.
I wish the interior of Tardis wasn't so steampunky inside (gah, trendy trendy), but that's a minor complaint. Explanations for the new Tardis and the soon-to-be new sonic screwdriver made perfect sense. The jailors of Prisoner Zero assessing the Doctors, with the flash of ALL the actors who've played that esteemed character over the years was a wonderful nod to the past amidst all these changes.
And with Steven Moffat now doing the writing, I'm expecting new levels of creepiness and excitement. The previews bit after the episode showed that the Blink angels are back (omg fucking creepy like whoa!), as well as the Daleks and the Cyberman and so much, much more. I got a geek boner just watching the clips. Color me aroused. Bring it on.
