electronically wet

Jun 23, 2010 12:27

In a stroke of genius, I managed to leave my Canon G10 outside last night. And oh, guess what, it didn't just rain, it fucking stormed.

I can only pray to the gods that the rice trick does the job. Otherwise, FML. I can't exactly afford another $500 camera right now (and I'm too snobby to settle for less). :(

and i was upset this morning because it seems like my 8 year old $15 card reader died.

shit. i hope the rice trick works. ben (heir postmarks) knows a ton about cameras, i'll ask him if there's anything else he can suggest.

ben said you need to take the battery/ies out as soon as you can and rice trick it until it is totally, absolutely, positively no-chance-of-even-a-little-remaining-moisture dry. power going through the electronics right now is a bad thing. resist the temptation to turn it on and check because if you turn it on and there's still moisture inside, it might get sauced.

he also said you might want to check out zorb-it, which is really more for storing your camera after using it in a wet or humid environment, but it can be used the same way the rice is used (except it's professional-grade material and will absorb more faster.)

ninevah used to work at a camera shop, used to be HEAVY into cameras and photography. Both he and I knew that turning a wet electronic on was the very last thing we wanted to to if we wanted to save it. Hell, sometimes we even run our keyboards (the pc ones, not the lappy ones, mind) under the shower to clean out the gunk, and then let them dry for a handful of days.

We have friends who've dunked their phones, laptops, mp3 players and then stupidly turned them on that the lesson has certainly stuck. We're not planning on turning it on for probably a week or so, just to be sure ( ... )

If you have some handy, "crystal" cat litter (the expensive stuff) is actually silica gel. Even more dessicant-y than rice.
