I'd always been a big fan of Andrew in Buffy and have argued over and over about how pathetic and insulting it was that his motivation in later series 6 and 7 was ignored or treated as a joke

As a writer, I don't want to be responsible for telling a viewer want to think. Which is why Andrew was particularly well written and played, because nothing is ever made explicit - this his own lack of awareness is something that crosses over to the viewer. Now we can see, in context, that he is clueless in all sorts of areas, so we can make the assumption that he is gay but he doesn't recognise it

I'm really glad you posted on this as we're pretty much in agreement but you're far more skillful than I.
I had assumed that Dumbledore was gay but I think only from the final book rather than anything before. What I was actually quite pleased about was that the character was very established and loved by children and parents and then at the end she was very public about him being gay. To me this has kids learning that gay people are perfectly nice and parents growing from their childrens attitudes.
I could get really picky and be annoyed that he turns out to be the manipulative one who dies, but I was okay with him being the manipulative one who dies before I found out he was gay. :D
Yeah - she said that she didn't want to be explicit in the books, but that she assumed that adults reading it had worked it out.
I can empathise with her not wanting to make a big deal of it in the books - but on the other hand, it would have been really nice if it had been explicit.

I'm not sure what I would have prefered there.
