Rock Band and it's incredible allure.

The fact that I'm still playing Rock Band several times a week is pretty amazing.  I usually burn through games in a couple weeks and that's about it.  Despite the fact that I may want to play them again, there are always so many other good games I want to play, I'll never get the time to replay a game.

Guitar Hero maps the notes to just random ass keys on the guitar? I would think it obvious to do it the way Rock Band does, though of course with 5 buttons, you can't really do the octave thing, but generally the higher notes are keyed to the blue and orange keys, because it makes sense. But you told me about a friend of yours who hated Rock Band because all he did was try to perfectly match the timing since he was a fanatic of DDR, so Guitar Hero seems to be geared more towards people who are playing for that skill reason, rather than for music. If you want more realism, maybe Rock Band 3 should have a 144 button controller...or just buy a guitar and mock anyone who plays Guitar Hero.

Well, in GH3, it's not really random. But their techniques aren't as consistent as Harmonix. They don't seem to have set rules for certain mappings the way Rock Band does. Guitar Hero's are still basically the same, but they add things in that do nothing but make it more difficult to play.

Here's a link to a comparison video. While some of it is the same between the two games, a lot of it is not. It should be pretty obvious why GH3's version isn't fun to play.
