I'm so sick of the power being out. When I get back home I might go to the electric company and personally thank them for only sucking some of the time instead of most of the time. It's the last week of classes, I have two papers to finish, and I'm stuck fighting 44 other people for a spot at one of the three remaining computers. I kind of wish I ( Read more... )

Well, copy notebook should at least be easy to find.

The problem with setting up computers for these kids is that you need a massive CPU surge protector dingus, or risk the computer getting totally fried every time the power surges. Maybe a more viable option would be to set up a fund with the teachers, pass the hat with your co-students or whatever, and see if they could take the kids to a webcafe on a weekly or some kind of rotational basis. Then if you wanted you could send back some learning games that they could install.

When I was there I had to face some of that "You're from America, so clearly you're a rich miracle worker who can fix all these problems we have." So many times during my research and study there I had to explain that I was just a student and didn't have the resources for an NGO/nonprofit kind of project.

But postage for that would probably be more expensive than the computers themselves. One of the older boys, the 15 year old I'd mentioned before, really wants to learn to play guitar. He asked if we could send him a used guitar and music.

I just happen to have a couple of used computers and a used guitar here. You'd be surprised how cheap shipping can be if you're crafty. Did you ever find out about that "international donations" thing? I think there's room to really help them if we can get around that.

Time files!

Ask Nordie why tuition is so expensive and what he's doing to address the disprity between tuition costs and family incomes.
