ubuntu is a pain

It is still stunning to me how much longer it took to get ubuntu, in all its apt-get glory(thanks, debian!), to properly install, as opposed to opensolaris ( Read more... )

"Bulletproof" X was the worst thing to happen to Ubuntu, as far as I'm concerned. This low-graphics mode is not very user friendly in my opinion; I prefer it to bomb out and give me an output log, so I'll know what the fscking problem is.

If you have an 8000-series GeForce, you're not terribly likely to get the open-source "nv" driver working, and the nvidia-glx-new in Ubuntu's repository is not as new as the package name suggests. All told, though, I'm glad you got it working via Envy (which I've found to be quite handy).

Envy isn't necessary but it sure helps. I found, though, that attempting to manually build the nvidia kernel module would sometimes put me in dependency hell, because ubuntu has a restricted modules package that would sometimes conflict with the built module version.

Ugh.

Does it offer to use Iced-Tea on x86? Or are you running Ubuntu amd64?

ah, to follow up, it is amd64 ubuntu. i'm also running an NVIDIA 7950GT. Envy fixed it up. The crazy thing was, at one point, it was working. then i "had to reboot" and it broke again. weird, fucking, shit. thank god for envy.

64-bit! GO BIG OR GO HOME, FOO

I'm doing 64-bit on both the laptop and desktop now; I only run into issues with Java on the web (Iced-Tea being a bit iffy yet) but Flash via nspluginwrapper alleviates most of my browsing pain, and I have gotten everything else to work with a little persistence and scholarly pursuit.
