Chicago, 1951: Archaeopteryx and Branta

By the time Eustace finally made it indoors, everybody had gathered to watch the spectacle. Of course they had. While there was no lack of understanding among the Friends, there was no surfeit of dignity, either. Sometimes Eustace the Un-Dragoned got quite dragonish about it, and given today's circumstances, he rather rudely thought, a dragon was ( Read more... )

Oh, how I love that even after all these years, we still have a bit of awestruck Eustace when it comes to the High King. He still slips into that mode every once in a while and it's rather adorable. (I don't suppose you were inspired by this recent article in the BBC about dinosaur feathers?)

Where there's a Narnian, there's a way, as Jill was fond of saying. -- Ooh, yes, I like this saying very much!

And how awesome is Polly Plummer? She has connections and isn't afraid to use them. Just like Edmund... and speaking of the Just King, poor dear. He really needed a breather didn't he? :-) And of course, it's probably best not to ask after all.

And Susan!! With Tebbitt! Hahahaha. And they're still hitting the clubs in DC... meeting up with Agnes and her family, perhaps?

And best of all, I love that this story just works around all the other ones that have been posted here. Excellent all around!

Penny for the smart lady! The recent dinosaur feather news was precisely what brought it to my attention. (That, and, oddly, an article about how wild cockatoos are teaching each other English.)

I get the idea that Agnes, or someone of her acquaintance, tipped Susan and Tebbitt off to the blues scene in 1950s Chicago. a glorious time.

Wonderful! I love how you pulled in everyone, coming and going for their own reasons. And Eustace trying to figure out exactly what he should be getting from Peter's new love of poetry. (I wonder, did Peter and Tebbitt compare notes on American and British poets?) For some reason, I really love seeing Eustace and Peter together, possibly because they're at such opposite ends of so many things and practically never appeared on page together in canon.

I love the idea of Polly knowing *everybody* and plan to make use of it at some point. And Lucy the rabble-rouser!

Also, thank you for introducing me to the word "wangled", which I thought was a misspelling of "wrangled" until I went and looked it up to be sure. I wonder how many times I've seen or heard it over the years and just not noticed!

In my (very limited) understanding of the words' usage, wrangled is American and wangled is English. Kind of like the whining/whinging divide.

I really like Eustace and Peter too, because of that exact reason - we almost never get to see them in canon, but there are so many hints and ways their interactions could go.

Peter and Tebbitt just sorta puffed up and glared and walked stiff-legged around each other, while the girls all giggled at their resemblance to dogs strutting for dominance. Eustace wondered if he should get involved until Lucy fixed him with a glare and shook her head. Edmund had already sized up the situation, made his own opinions, caught Susan's wordless wrath, accepted her Don't you even think of it gesture, reappraised the situation, and then decided it's more amusing to watch Peter deal with it.

I think i just about stopped laughing about Eustace and the geese. Those birds are evil and I think they have to be the missing link in temperament at least between birds and dinosaurs.

Like to read about Eustace and Peter but leaveing out the geese but definably alligators
