It's not that hard really -I took the picture in infrared, so all you need is an IR filter (e.g Hoya R72, or Wratten 87c), a tripod (unless you've hacked the camera, the IR exposure time can run into seconds, so stability is paramount for a sharp image), and patience -the final image often requires a fair bit of manipulation to get the tones right :)
