Italy is great. Really. There are parties, there’s the Immortal, there’s lots of culture that’s lasted thousands of years, leaving Buffy free from the (sadly not unreasonable) worry that Dawn’s second home will also collapse into the ground. And Rome is beautiful, like nothing she’s ever seen before. Buffy’s got nothing to complain about.

Except. Except except except.

Italy’s a long way away from... actually? Everything. She wanders around the city at her leisure during the daylight hours and she’s seen a lot of the things that she read about in history class, and she’s gone shopping, and it’s all been great. But.

But but but but.

She can’t explain it. She... misses Sunnydale. Its proximity to Los Angeles, people who speak English, and yeah, even the demons. There are vampires here, yeah, and plenty of things to kill so she doesn’t feel entirely useless, but she’s starting to wonder if she’s going to get to save the world again. It’s not that she really, you know, wants an apocalypse to come rushing out at her, but she’s never been more ready.

She’s strong and getting stronger. The dancing, the Immortal, the shopping, the art - that’s all pretty much just a way to pass the time while she puts herself back together. While she bakes. While she gets ready.

For Angel. Or Spike... maybe, but really it’s Angel. Every time she closes her eyes, he’s the one she sees. And Buffy thinks that maybe she’s getting better, getting back to the girl that she was meant to be.

Maybe. Maybe.

She and Angel, just. She can’t vocalize it, she can’t even think it, but she knows. It’s him, it’s always going to be.

And even if she’s thousands of miles away, she can still smile, because they have time. She’s healing.
