I am a pirate king! And it is, it is, a glorious thing: to be a pirate king!

I went to the NYC opera this past week with Noel and Karen and we saw Pirates of Penzance which, of course, was wonderful. I love Gilbert & Sullivan: they're just so silly! And silly is very important... there are more than enough reasons to feel rotten; we all could use a lift from time to time ( Read more... )

BAITING YOU!!?!? God damn it, John, I'm just trying to be kind!!!! No, I AM being kind. You're simply so comfortable there on your martyr's back that you interpret everything I say to you as somehow being an attack!! Oh, you caught me, John. I'm laughing, laaaaaaughing, ever so cruelly behind this mask of compassion.

I'm trying to be NICE, John. Give me a fucking break. I. Feel. TERRIBLE. about what happened. I am not so vain as to be above remorse.

You, however, are insufferable in your self-pity.

Can't wait to see you again...

those friends of yours are NOT the only people you know that would go see Pirates and Lear... don't flatter your self my dear, you are not in fact the only one with decent taste. I've tried to see King Lear twice and will try again this week!

Save yourself the time; it wasn't very good. ALL the women were horrific, which, I have sadly noted, tends to be the case with performances of Shakespeare. It cannot be said that the male characters are deeper or more interesting, that Goneril, Reagen, and Cordelia are just set dressing, but they are so inept at their craft, bereft of any gravitas or, well, talent, that you are delighted when Lear exiles Cordelia.

True, some of the men are not so strong either, but they are not as uniformly atrocious as their female counterparts. Hence, no doubt, why we call these women actresses.
