Title: Constructs
Rating: PG
Author: Bee
Verse: Timelines
Summary: Romana has to tell the boys that April is gone. But they're having trouble grasping the concept. The Doctor, of course, is no help at all.
Notes: ...Do I really need to say anything? Timelines is an AU Doctor Who/RENT crossover verse. It is crack. But it is fun. :D
Disclaimer: I do not own either show. Alas.

"Okay, April, seriously. What's going on?"

There were four people on the roof of the converted industrial building on 11th St. - two very confused, one very thoughtful, and one paying no attention to the other three, preferring to watch a pigeon build a nest. The one who'd spoken was dark-haired and frowning, his eyes obscured by his glasses, and his blond friend seemed utterly baffled by... everything.

The dark-haired woman sighed. "To start with, I'm not April."

The boys stared at her for a moment.

"Do you... want to change your name?" the blond asked uncertainly.

"No, Roger. I am not April. My name is Romana."

They stared some more. Romana sighed again, shoved her hands in the pockets of her (slightly too-large) pink coat. "It's complicated, but... April's gone. That's all you need to know."

"So... you're related to her?"

Sigh.

"Mark, please, try to follow. I was April. For a little while. But I'm Romana again now, and April's gone."

The tall man with large ears abandoned the pigeon and moved on to inspecting the various layers of graffiti. Romana glared at him briefly. Roger looked between Mark and Romana, still lost.

"So... your personality split." He looked rather triumphant about figuring that out. Romana pinched the bridge of her nose.

"No. April wasn't real. She was a... a construct, created as a physical and mental disguise."

"Your personality stopped being split?" Roger ventured hopefully.

"Doctor," Romana groaned, and the other man straightened up attentively. "You try. I'm not getting through."

"Right!" he said cheerfully, his accent distinctly British. Romana stepped back and the Doctor stood in front of the boys as if gearing up for an epiphany. There was a pause, and then he said simply, "We're aliens."

Silence. Romana's hand hit her forehead with a faintly audible slapping noise, and the boys stared oddly at the Doctor, who was grinning as if he'd just cleared everything up.

"You're... from England?" Mark guessed eventually.

"April's not an alien," Roger commented. "She's from Connecticut. I've met her parents and everything."

Romana made a faint frustrated noise. "Doctor, you're not helping," she said sternly to the Doctor, who looked vaguely affronted. She then turned to the boys. "Look, I was trying to avoid having to be so blunt about it, but I am from another planet. There was a war, and I was disguised as a human child and sent to Earth to keep me safe. Now the war's over, and I can't stay here anymore. April was an identity I created, and while I was disguised I thought I really was her. But I'm not, and she's gone now." She paused, took a deep breath, and let it out. "Do you understand?"

"Yeah," Mark said faintly, his eyes wide. "Okay. Um... I guess this is goodbye, then?"

"It is." Romana smiled, a little sad. "Thank you. For everything." She slipped her hand into the Doctor's, and they walked into the blue phone box that had appeared (somehow) on the roof. A moment later, the boys stared slack-jawed as it disappeared in front of their eyes.

They stood there for a few minutes, silent.

"I don't get it," Roger said finally. "Was April just abducted by aliens?"
