Dracula had one goal in mind: release the prisoners from the CES. If the strange stone Lua had given him truly could open any door, then it should succeed where the Warden Items failed. He stormed up the stairs, claws out, fangs bared, quite ready to fight an army of Faceless Ones if that was what it took. He had friends in there, and ( ... )

Several minutes after Dracula made his call for assistance, Luke appeared in the stairwell behind him, lookout out onto the deck.

"Where is this giant spider?"

"It guards the door to the CES. It has mounted the wall above the door and seems capable of moving quietly over any surface. It has a fair range with its spittle. No ideas about any other natural weaponry but its fangs are prodigious." He actually seemed a little intimidated.

"Alright. I'll go see if I can't convince it to move. You watch my back. If I can't kill it, I'll at least try to keep it away from the door while you open it and get the people out of the CES. Got it?"

Luke found it a little amusing that this would be the second time he was trusting a vampire to watch his back since he'd been on the Barge.

Arthas is fortunate (?) enough to be on deck when it starts, staring down at the dark beneath the rail. The pull to go over is still there, as is the certainty that something will be waiting. He's not sure if he's curious enough to jump just yet. He's in a good mood for the first time in a long time - stained to the elbows in crusted blood from the shades, leaking ichor from a blow to the head, an island of calm and control in the middle of the Barge going violently insane and rid of the pain of not killing for the first time in months. This is his habitat.

He drums his fingers on the rail and something warm hits his face.

By the time he bounds around the corner, following a slough of remains like a cat chasing a string, his hair is matted down with red. Blood beads on his armor, and the streaks of white skin and grinning teeth still clean on his face stand out like a bare skull. He ignores both men and slows his pace, watching the spider with rapt fascination.

Dracula had mixed feelings about this. Why be heroic when nobody would believe that he even tried? Why make the effort for people who largely hated and feared him? What was the point?

And yet...

He was committed now. "I will take the high road. I can fly on deck. If it goes for you I can harry it from behind.

"Good luck."

Then Arthas arrived and Dracula blinked, looking at him both curiously and warily.

"If you want battle you've come to the right place. Beware, it spits acid."

Luke glanced over at Arthas, noticing the gore smeared over his face and armor. Someone's been clearly enjoying themselves. Not about to wait any longer, Luke stepped out of the stairwell and headed for the CES while looking around warily for the spider.

Dracula rose into the air--and behind him saw gouts of reddish webbing fly. Before either of them could do anything, Arthas was being rapidly bundled off toward the CES door like the prey of a trapdoor spider.

He swore loudly in Romanian, something about the spider's aunt, improbable sex acts and a goat. Then he was forced to dodge another ropy blast of acid from its maw. There was no chance to rescue Arthas before the man was shoved through the door and it was slammed shut again.

"Damnit!"

He'd kinda been hoping to have Arthas' help, but looked like that plan was screwed. Luke decided he'd just do what he did best and charged straight for the spider, dropping his shoulders low before slamming into it like a linebacker with the force of a car.

Both bodies went across the deck, plowing into a nearby entryway.

Dracula blinkblinked as he hovered above, then shook it off. "Excellent shot!"

The creature waggled its legs blindly for a few moments, then started to try and grab at Luke with them. The individual bits oozed at him, but bones stuck out of the tips of legs and palps, giving them rudimentary points.

It was only when Dracula darted for the CES door, however, that it began to struggle in earnest. Worse, when its palps spread and it made a long sucking sound as if about to hawk the most gigantic acid loogie over Luke ever.

Dracula turned in horror. "Look out!"

Luke's entire torso would be awash in whatever gunk the creature had regurgitated on him, wisps of smoke rise with a steady hiss as the acidic bile begins eating through his clothes. Eyes closed to protect them, Luke staggers only to be knocked away by the shambling mass which now scurried across the deck towards Dracula.

Dracula darted into the air as the creature made a running leap at him. The dodge was followed up by a desperate backpedal in midair as the creature landed lightly on the wall and sprang off of it again. He tried to keep to the task at hand, to get to the door with the stone that leaped like a live thing in his fist, but at every turn the thing would cut him off ( ... )

Unfortunately, Luke hadn't been able to hear Dracula's cries about using the stone on the door but he did hear that howl. Managing to wipe enough of the gunk from his eyes to see, his clothes were a tattered mess of rags now he turned to find Dracula pinned.

Worried for the Inmate's safety as well as angered by being incapacitated, even for a moment, Luke rushed over and gripped the thing from behind.

The muscles in his arms and back flexing with the strain, Luke let out a roar of effort as he literally threw the monster back over his shoulder and over the edge of the Barge.

"No! The stone!" Dracula groped forward in desperation with one talon and one bone-capped stump. "The stone--"

He collapsed backward, feeling a weight more massive than the spider settle over his heart. "It was our only way through the CES door..."

And the spider knew somehow. It knew...and defeated me even in death.

Crouched on the deck, he stared numbly at his arm stump even as the bone stub at its center lengthened visibly.

"What're you talking about? What stone? Aw hell, we need to find someone who can look after that hand. Here, lemme get your shirt, we can try and stop the bleeding."

He has no idea how quickly Dracula will heal, but better safe than sorry.

"Lua...gave me one of those stones. It works as a Warden item, but opens everything..."

Too late now. Too late.

But...he sighed.

"The beast's guts were full of acid. I suppose we could not have dug for the stone anyway..."

He looked down at the stump. "It will scab over and regrow on its own...if I have enough blood. But it is gruesome." He shouldered out of the rags of his coat and vest, and tore the shirt off, using his teeth and good arm to rip the silk into shreds.
