It's possible they couldn't find an actor who had Rochester's swarthy charisma and wasn't handsome, I suppose.

The original was probably in the script, but they soon found that even Mia Wasikowska couldn't deliver that line with a straight face. Holy Jesus, that man is attractive, even with that ridiculous Period Hair.
