How much are the tickets (including handling fees) for Burning Man this year? My sources inform me that this year's budget is slated to surpass $7 million!! My goodness, since its humble inauguration twenty years ago, the festival has certainly matured into quite the "culture business"! :-)
But alas, if I can afford the steep handling fee, you'll find me in the drum circle--unless of course it interferes with the world premier of "Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo". :-D
I wasn't looking for it, and most nights it took me several hours to find something other than it. But that's when it's most worth it, when I go up to the bar and ask for a drink, and they tell me to bartend because they're all too trashed to pour, and some guy from Crash Worship is kinda playing around on some drums.
Or the homebrew guy near the funhouse, with the PVC gothic architecture.
Of course, this time around I'll know an order of magnitude more people.
I'm sure that there is good stuff, just like there is some good stuff in every backwards society all over the world. The problem is that you have to dig through the phoneys to get to the real people. When this is the present situation, it's inevitable that small factions will arise and split off, to do something better.
I went 5 years ago. The San Francisco club culture is partly why I don't want to go back. I feel that it has a large influence on the playa. What do you think?
Perhaps we could create an army of ugly, hideous monstrosity, and descend and devour until nothing was left but us...and the Death Guild. Because who wants to fuck with the Death Guild?
But that sounds like a lot of work, and besides, I have better things to do than to defend the integrity of a counter-culture event that once truly impressed me.

When was the first time you were there? And the most recent? Maybe you're wanting something other than Burning Man.
