Yeah the bit about making burners cry was a bit over the top.

There's an editor's note on the story saying "This story is real" - my guess is they got a bunch of questions about that :)

Sadly sol3 is correct. I'm totally dumb enough to fall for something like this, so I checked the print edition today; it does indeed contain said editor's note. Somehow the note did not make the online edition.

While the parallel is pretty strained, I'm trying to picture the Sisters acting surprised that some Catholics find their little pastiche offensive.

Surprised? If anything, i'd think they'd feel disappointed if it wasn't found offensive by the catholic church :)

And as usual, the comments section only adds to the 'ouch'.

One of the ironies of the situation is that the recalcitrant promoters seem to have received an introductory course into Native American history that not that easy to find elsewhere.

It's also ironic that their (belated) mea culpa was probably the only thing that made them sit through what was obviously an uncomfortable and volatile situation for everyone involved.

You can't claim you're not stealing when both you and your victim know that you've been caught red-handed.

My favorite? "There's a lot of pain," he said. "I don't want you to agree with me, I want you to understand!"

I can just see those shell-shocked kids nodding and smiling as if they knew how they had fucked up, when really they had no idea.
