I second fangfaceandrea in wondering why the writers couldn't see how awesome these two were together and why that needed to be maintained.
Oh, well. At least we have talented fic writers like you to give us these moments. The character voices were just right here; these two have very specific ways of speaking to/interacting with each other, and you really nailed that. And I especially love the sly little reference to "Destiny" over on AtS; clearly Dawn isn't any more fooled by the stairs excuse than Fred was.
Lovely little ficlet. There can never be enough Spike & Dawn fic in the world.
I think it had to do with Dawn being 15 and suddenly it was inappropriate for her and Spike to have scenes together... (don't get me started on how dumb that logic is)

Really? I mean... sure, I did that on purpose. ;) Glad you enjoyed the fic!
LOL, nope. I'll be honest, my memory of AtS isn't nearly as good as my memory of BtVS, so I didn't even remember that line, although that may have been how my subconscious came up with it. The stairs thing was intended as an ironic nod to the types of excuses abused women often give for their injuries.
(Also, weirdly, I have a scene from an unposted fic where someone questions the fact that Buffy's limping, and she says she fell down the stairs. When Spike calls her on the bad excuse, she says, "No, really. Dawn left her shoes at the top of the steps and I didn't see them." Apparently, I have a thing with stairs...)
This put a smile on my face for the rest of the day! Spike/Dawn friendship always does that to me, especially when character voices are this good. :) I truly can't understand why the PTBs abandoned this great friendship. *shakes fist at them*
You get to feeling like you just have to - let it out.”
“By hitting people.”
“Yeah. I mean, no. I mean… sometimes.”
Hee! I now have a mental image of the expression on Spike's face, and it's priceless!
Oh, this was lovely. I wish there had been more interaction between these two on the show *sigh*.
He shrugged. “I’m a vampire. I solve all my problems with violence. But, uh, you shouldn’t do that,” he backtracked quickly, “because you’re a good girl, and I’m evil, and you shouldn’t listen to anything I say.”
Hee, loved this line, I can absolutely hear Spike saying that. Hmm, now I'm in the mood to read more Spike-Dawn friendship fics...

Really? You didn't mean to reference that? It's the first thing I thought of, and I found it really funny. That cracks me up a lot.
