Title: The Now And The Not Yet
By: latetothpartyhp
Genre: drabble, angst
Rating: G
Spoilers: for Legion
Warnings: none
Author's Note: First fanfic ever. Unbeta'd, so if I got the LoSH stuff wrong let me know. I would also like to add that it is incredibly empowering to stop taking the crud the show has handed me and write some crud of my own. I swear I could stop a bullet right now.
Imra knows he will ask; even if she could not sense the desire, she would know. He always asks. And, as always, she refuses. She must. She has promised. And yet...
She was raised on stories of Kal-El's heroism, his inspiring leadership, his wisdom and justice. Everyone knows these stories, but she has the privilege of knowing the gentle and forgiving heart behind them. Her heart, in turn, breaks a little for him. It is her promise that wounds him. Even if it is another who rejects him, she is the one who must see the pain in his eyes, feel it in her soul.
It is not her place to explain though. She thinks - she hopes - in time, the scar tissue on his old friend's heart will dissolve, and she will be able to smile at him with truth and say, “Yes. Chloe would love to see you.” That will be a joyful day.
But it is not this day.
So she smiles falsely, and implants her hypnotic suggestion, and escorts him home to history. He won't remember he has asked, nor will he remember the pain of her refusal. She can do that much for him. Someday, she won't need to.
Someday.
Not yet.
