Konqueror doesn't use the Java plug-in but uses its own implementation for a Java Applet server, called KJAS.
It therefore just needs to know the "java" executable. Usually the default settings work, ut sometimes one needs to add the full path to the executable as well (Settings->configure Konqueror, Section Java&Java-Script)

This means you can advertise your SFTP via Avahi, and then it will appear as an icon in "network servers" whenever you are connected to that network.

So you don't need to type it in, you can just click it, or see any other servers available other than your normal ones.

There's two similar things for GNOME - firstly the GNOME Launch Box which is pretty much the same, secondly the Deskbar applet which is more the universal lookup thing.

Well, gnome-launch-box is the worlds buggiest piece of software, often freezes while keeping a lock on the desktop needing killing.

It also hasn't been updated for the new libgnome-menus

As for deskbar applet, its kinda cool, although still lacking a global shortcut key.

Nope; Alt+F3 focuses it. And that's configurable, even.
