Which is, of course, not what I should have been doing. But well, what's new. So, in a desperate attempt to defeat my anxiety about an illustration project, I've been making studies of... well, everything. Okay, not really, but still. I've been drawing skeletons and undead people and action scenes and then I realized that I don't really know how

Those drawings do look nice! Artists are our own worst critics.

Look at those drawings and imagine one of your friends drew them. What would you tell them?

Okay, I would be properly amazed if they weren't mine, but... you know how everything you can't do it's difficult and everything you can it's easy? It looks like, the moment I think I'm able to do something it loses its worth or something. So now I can copy images and suddenly I think everybody can if they practice enough and they (the drawings, not the other people) have no spark because they are just copies and I'm just not good enough to do this without references. WELL, IT'S NOT AS IF THE REST OF THE WORLD WORK WITHOUT REFERENCES.

Ehem, sorry for the rant. I'm a bit of at my wit's end with myself regarding my lack of confidence.

it's possible that I *could* do this if I practiced enough, but I haven't, and am unlikely to, so you are still pretty awesome.

Just because others could MAYBE do a thing if they put the work in, doesn't devalue the fact that YOU put the work in!

You're definitely right and I do appreciate the reminder. It's pretty much like that with every profession: some people have spent the time to become proficient at something and that's why you pay for that service from them, because they can do that and you can't. I wouldn't think to dis a mechanic of a lab technician because I could also become one if I put my mind to it, but somehow, when it's about my art, suddenly it's okay to think my efforts aren't special.

these look good, I have the same problem where I can copy well but drawing stuff by myself is never really good

I know, right? It's like they are too different disciplines! I just march on hoping that at some point I'll manage to improve also my original drawings.
