So apparently I am the only "rebel" willing to blow off a worthless, waste-of-my-time, ungraded, 3-minute class presentation on material we've already gone over in class. Most everyone I've talked to agrees that this hour could be put to better use, but like the sheep that they evidently are, they are going to do it anyway, essentially because the ( Read more... )

a three minute class presentation that takes an hour? mruf?

as far as profs who treat students like children: it is one of those things that less distinguished professors tend towards. i know i'd be hell for any prof if i was still in school (towards the end i started relating to professors as people i was paying rather than total authority), but seriously, students in college are adults, and actually do have adult decisions and control over their lives.

it was especially fun when it was obvious that a prof didn't know his or her subject material... asking the difficult questions, getting a roundabout and/or incorrect answer... and then telling your prof you skipped class for a week because you felt playing zelda was a better use of your time.

The problem is we don't have an assigned time of presentation; I could assume we are going in group order and estimate it roughly, but as there are live animals involved things could easily get thrown off-course.

Email back and ask what exactly was "inappropriate" about the question? And when she babbles some crap call her on it, and ask exactly why she wants to waste time on things not even applicable to the progression of your knowledge of the subject at hand.

Or now make her life hell by asking the right questions to make her say "I don't know." That is so hard for so many profs to say...I miss hearing it.

Unfortunately, that response comes up often already, particularly in regards to a couple of the anatomy professors who got their p.h.d.s in human anatomy (the aforementioned included). The other reason it tends to come up is unless a prof. is teaching in a specific area in which they are extremely well-versed (and usually doing research), there is no way they know how to address questions for all different kinds of mammals, reptiles, amphibians, birds, fish, cephalopods, etc.
