FIC: Love Me (Love Me Not)

And then after all that, I wrote a Thing. I honestly don't know if it's a good Thing, but in the clear light of, um, three in the afternoon, I can say I don't hate it. Which makes a nice change.

I can't thank you enough for this lovely comment. At the risk of going all personal on you, I haven't written anything I've been satisfied with in, well, a very long time, so to get a comment like this makes me quite soppily happy. I've been trying to write something exploring Eight and Charley's attitudes to love for ages (so much headcanon), but it kept ending up weird and Not Right, until I worked out that my version of Eight honestly doesn't see where the boundary between platonic and romantic love lies. After that, everything made a lot more sense. /rambling

Also, you are double plus awesome for liking the Divine Comedy. Friending you back! I'm pretty sure I recognise you as having written some Eight and Charley fic yourself, right? BRB, going journal-stalking. :)

At risk of butting in here...if you'd be interested in sharing your Eight/Charley work-in-progress, I'm willing to offer some help with it.

I agree with the previous reviewer - this is lovely. You have the voices down perfectly (and pretty much nothing else is needed to get me to read Charley and Eight), but also so much of Charley's voice is in the prose as well, but the way you've pulled out this conversation - it's them, with their banter and lightness, but then with that sort of walking on eggshells bit that can lie underneath it. You've got it both ways & that isn't an easy thing.

Thank you so much! I'm really happy to hear you think I've got the voices down - that's always the bit I worry about most, but luckily Charley is fairly distinctive.

I love Eight and Charley's relationship, because it can be all light-hearted adventures and fun, but there's that more serious underside that's really interesting to explore. Yay for complicated characters! And Charley is just one of my favourite characters ever because she actually acts on all those daydreams of dressing up as a boy and running away to sea air.

Yes, they're definitely a pair that can have their cake and eat it, as it were. Charley is fantastic, and I love the way you've nailed them both here.

This is lovely. Thoughtful, contemplative and perfectly in character. Loving the angst and awkwardness at the end especially.

I normally despise self-pimpage, particularly when people slip it in in the midst of reviewing other people's stories...but this story has so much in common with one of mine that I really wanted to mention it. What you've done for "Seasons of Fear," I did it for "The Chimes of Midnight" in my story "Plum Pudding." Great minds think alike, I suppose. ;-)

Thanks for sharing this, and I hope you have more fic to come!

Awkwardness is one of the few things I do well. :)

Hee, great minds clearly do! There's so much complexity to Eight and Charley, I'm only surprised there's not more fic out there (or maybe there is and I have been blind to it all).

Well, I got a tear in my eye. I'm new to the audio plays, this is the first fic I read an whammo, it hits the spot. Thank you for writing.
