The only consolation I can offer is to mention another novel you might like: Moonwise, by Greer Gilman. No, I haven't read it. But it has a growing reputation, almost an underground reputation, like it's really a secret, for being one of the all-time great fantasy novels. I've looked at it long enough to know that its prose is incredibly dense and intricate -- actually rather dauntingly so.
