Sadly, my parents are a heterosexual couple and running into similar problems concerning my father's health. They are not married but have been together for almost 33 years.Living wills, power of attorney and such are all in place but things like this could still easily happen with them. This is not just a GLBT issue but one for all couples who are not married. It really is deplorable, scary and sick.
This is why I am not happy with the Conservatives policies about "rewarding" marriage. I can see them encouraging shit like this. [grumble grumble grr grr] (dragging this icon out because some how in my mind it fits)
The conservatives really don't know it but it is not simply a morality issue for them. The dominant culture of America does not like any change that takes power and wealth out of their hands. If right are given to minorities of every and any type what's left for the dominate culture to control? Its all based on a white supremacist patriarchal point of view that comes down from religious-political debates and wars fought in Europe centuries ago that were supposedly based upon the Bible. Ah, Conservative with a capital C. As in 'British political party. Much of your point still stands though probably. As far as I'm aware the the Conservatives plan to provide tax breaks for married couples. This is a plan to reduce the cost to the tax payer of supporting poor, usually single parent, families. You see if you're a single parent in the UK you are often entitled quite a lot of financial help, but if you are part of a couple then there's less help, usually because there is at least one parent working. Their theory is based on statistics that "show" that couples who are married stay together for longer. Obviously that doesn't take into consideration both that those more likely to stay together are more likely to marry AND that it'll be a long time before the proposed tax breaks would earn enough back to pay for even a very modest wedding
