"I was a dad, once," the Doctor had told Rose, when they were trying to retrieve children trapped in drawings.

He'd also been a grandfather, but he didn't tell her that.

***

He visited Sarah Jane Smith. She was doing her bit to search for the truth and save the world. She had help from a couple of children, a pile of alien technology, a computer from UNIT and her sonic lipstick.

And then the TARDIS started screaming, it sounded like she was dying and coming back to life at the same time. Bidding farewell to his Sarah Jane, he disappeared. His ship went out of control, spinning in the Time Vortex.

Or maybe she knew just where she was going.

***

Cardiff, 2008, the controls eventually said, and they materialised. The Doctor opened the door, and saw someone who should have been dead.

"Jack!" he exclaimed.

"Doctor?" his captain asked.

"Do you know anyone else with one of these?" he asked, indicating the TARDIS.

"Not really, but..." Jack said, looking a bit lost.

"It's me, Jack. I'll explain, I promise. Come on, then! You know how temperamental she is. She found you, though," he said, trying to get Jack back on board.

"That she did." With that, Captain Jack Harkness walked back into the TARDIS.

Back into his home.

The Doctor stood at the central column and felt his ship calm down, as they dematerialised.

Just how was he going to explain all that he needed to?

***

As they travelled, Jack asked him, a little bitterly, "Why did you leave me?"

And the Doctor felt his ship and his hearts panic. "I thought you were dead, Jack. There were quite a lot of Daleks on the Games Station."

"Surprise!" Jack replied. "I was dead, Doctor, and then I wasn't. How did I come back from death, and why the hell can't I die?" he asked.

Ah, here was the Doctor's opportunity to explain.

"Rose opened the heart of the TARDIS. She came back to me with the Time Vortex running through her, and killed all the Daleks with a wave of her hand. But with death, there was also life..."

"Rose brought me back?"

"Yes, Rose brought you back. But getting the Time Vortex out of her meant using one of my lives. I had to use a little trick known as regeneration." But before Jack could process all that and ask his other question again, he asked, "Now, you can tell me why you're working for Torchwood, Jack. You do know I'm their Public Enemy Number One, don't you?"

"Of course I do, Doctor. That's the very first thing we're told, as potential recruits. But I knew that taking a job with them might well be the only way I could find you again. What did you do to earn that title, anyway? That particular bit isn't in the first brief," Jack said.

"Rose and I annoyed Queen Victoria, while trying to prevent her from being killed by a werewolf," he replied.

For once, the Doctor could see that Jack had no witty reply to that.

"Where's Rose, Doctor? Somehow, I know she's not dead..." he suddenly asked.

"She's trapped in a parallel world with her mum, her not-dead dad and Mickey. She's killing Cybermen, though, I should think, so good for her," he said, his voice breaking.

"Yeah, good for her," Jack replied.

They'd become distracted, but the Doctor asked about Jack's job again.

"Why, Jack? They hate me, they caused the Battle of Canary Wharf, and they shot a retreating ship out of the sky!"

"I know that, Doctor! I know you don't shoot a retreating enemy in the back! But that wasn't my team. I never worked for Torchwood One. I was in London that day, though. I actually took a trophy back with me." Jack smiled, but it didn't quite reach his eyes. "My team are in Cardiff, where you picked me up. I'd really like you to meet them. Can you take us back to the Hub?"

"Well, that's up to her." The Doctor pressed a few buttons, and his ship went spinning back to Cardiff, 2008. They materialised, and he opened the doors.

The Doctor and Jack walked out to papers strewn all over the floor.

"Oh, Ianto's gonna kill you. What a mess," Jack said, smirking.

Four people soon appeared, and at the sight of the two of them and the police box, apparently had nothing to say.

Jack then said, "Toshiko, Gwen, Owen, Ianto - this is the Doctor. I can safely say that despite what the powers that be would have us believe, he is not our enemy."

"What is he, then, Jack?" Gwen asked.

"A very dear friend. Someone who let me save the world with him, and took me in even after my initial actions had threatened the Earth. And he's someone who I respect a hell of a lot," Jack said, his voice cracking slightly. Quietly, he said, "Doctor, shall we show them the inside of the TARDIS?"

"Amazing idea, Jack! Do you want to make a bet about who says it first?" the Doctor said, sure that Jack knew just what he meant.

"I think it'll be Toshiko. She's my figures expert. And if I'm right, you have to tell me why I can't die," Jack said. "In return, I'll tell you how I got off the Games Station."

"Do they know you can't die, Jack?" he asked, choosing to ignore Jack's offer of a story for the moment.

"Yes, they do. I've come back in front of Gwen three times now, and twice in front of everyone else," Jack replied.

"Then it's a deal, and I'll tell all of you." Addressing the others, he continued, "Come on, you four. Jack and I want to show you the inside of this box."

They went inside the TARDIS, and the Doctor watched Jack's team's eyes go wide. Sure enough, it was Toshiko that said, "It's bigger on the inside."

"Time and Relative Dimensions in Space - TARDIS, Toshiko," Jack said. "A time machine."

"We could have done with one of these last week, Jack," Toshiko cryptically replied.

"Yeah, well," he said, looking sad.

What had happened?

"C'mon, let me show you. Owen, Ianto, you as well," Jack continued, taking them towards the central column.

Gwen had been silently asked to speak to him, for some reason. He used her presence to tell her who she reminded him of.

"Gwen, you look just like someone else who helped me save the world," he said.

"What from?" she asked.

"Oh, gas-based aliens, trying to get through the Rift and take over the Earth," he said.

"The usual, then?" Gwen replied.

"Yes, pretty much," he said, smiling.

It looked like she had another question. "How do you know about the Rift?" she asked.

"Now, that would be telling," he said. "But I came back to Cardiff with Jack, and my friend Rose, and we charged the TARDIS up, using Rift energy."

"I think he told me about that. Has this ship got a chameleon circuit?" she asked.

This young woman was clearly Jack's Rose replacement. "Yes, but it got a bit stuck, which is why she looks like a police call box. Gwen, let Jack show you how my rickety old ship tries to work," he said, leading her towards the central column.

Jack immediately said, "She didn't like that, Doctor! I could feel it!"

"Has she got back inside your head already, Jack? It's only been a few minutes!" he exclaimed.

"She still loves me, Doctor!" Jack leered.

He watched the central column glow and pulse in a suspicious way.

"Stop flirting with my ship, you!" the Doctor exclaimed.

He then watched the central column glow and pulse in an even more suspicious way.

'She's not the only one who loves you, Jack,' the Doctor thought, as he watched Jack explain the TARDIS to Toshiko, Gwen, Owen and Ianto.

And he realised something - he was once again a grandfather, of a kind. His companions had grown up, left home and had taken companions of their own.

He was reminded of Susan, who he'd long ago left behind on the Earth of the future to get married, and help rebuild it after a Dalek attack.

It was time for the story.

"Everyone!" he said, getting their attention. "Let me tell you just how your captain here helped me save the world from the Daleks, and why he can't die..."
