Displaced

On January 21st 1941, Captain Jack Harkness’ men all made it safely back home, after being surprised by the Luftwaffe on what should have been a routine training exercise.
Having personally shot down three enemy planes, the Captain himself saw the same blue-white light that he’d seen last night, and vanished.

In 2008, the man who’d taken his name was trying (and failing) to deal with the fallout of getting him and Toshiko back what apparently passed for the present.
“Jack, a Spitfire just appeared out of thin air,” Toshiko informed him, as she monitored the CCTV, the radar and a dozen other things. She looked up at him. “What if it’s him, Jack?” she asked sadly.
What had he done to deserve this, apart from the obvious? It would be him, and it would be different to Diane’s plane, and Jack would have to let him go back.
To die.
And it would all be even worse than it already was, after that night.
Jack sighed. “Let’s go and find out, Toshiko,” he said, grabbing his coat. “Just you and me. C’mon, I’ll drive.”

They went to the same airfield that Diane’s plane had arrived in, and watched the Spitfire land. The pilot shut off the engines, removed his headphones and helmet, and climbed out of the plane. As he removed his goggles, Jack’s heart sank.
It was him. The original Captain Jack Harkness.
Dressed in his leather and sheepskin flying jacket, he looked even better than he had in uniform.
Jack and Toshiko nodded silently to each other.
“Captain Harper? Toshiko?” a confused voice asked, walking across the runway and towards them.
“Yes, Captain Harkness, it’s us,” Jack said, feeling dreadful and elated at the same time.
The Captain stopped in front of Jack, slightly wide-eyed. “I shot down three German planes, there was the same kind of light that you two disappeared into, and then I was here... What happened? Are my men OK?!” the Captain asked worriedly.
“Your men are fine, Captain. I can assure you that they all made it safely home,” Jack said, playing his hand.
“I won’t ask how you know that, given what I saw at the Ritz... But what about the next time? Will they all make it home then?” the Captain asked pointedly.
“I don’t know, Captain,” Jack lied. Swiftly changing the subject, he said, “As for you, we think you fell through a crack in time.”
“A crack in time?” the Captain repeated.
“Yes,” Jack replied.
“So, what year is this? I’m assuming it’s not 1941,” the Captain asked.
“It’s 2008,” Jack said.
“Can I get back to 1941?”
“I don’t know, Captain Harkness. I really don’t know,” Jack said, not lying this time. 'If you knew what was going to happen to you, you wouldn’t even want to get back,' he thought. 'I really wish I didn’t know about temporal paradoxes and the Reapers, because then I'd try to save you.'
His namesake looked so lost and hurt, and Jack really wanted to kiss all that away. But a kiss didn’t seem to be appropriate, this time, so he just wrapped his arms around the man, held him close and rocked him a little. Slowly, he was embraced back.
What the hell were they going to do?
