Can’t Get You Out Of My Head

If these people are just in his head, then Sam Tyler knows how he constructed them.
Well, most of them, anyway.
Gene Hunt is clearly Bodie, Doyle, Starsky, Hutch, Harry Palmer and Jack Regan, all mixed together.
Ray and Chris are those characters’ second in commands and assistants.
Annie’s possibly someone from The Bill, Taggart or Prime Suspect. Or maybe she's just a mixture of the girls in his police station, in 2006.
But as for the Test Card Girl, Sam does not quite know how or when he personified her, with her creepy clown and her creepy noughts and crosses game. Maybe it was in the early 1980s, in the days of just three TV channels, which didn't broadcast 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Maybe it was here. A dream within a dream. "Very Shakespearean, Sam," he tells himself.
If she asks him once more if he wants to play with her clown, he might scream.
