As the TARDIS disappeared, from past experience, Jack knew he had to reach the Doctor quickly, before he couldn’t reach him. “Get over here and help us with the door, Doctor!” he yelled.
A blast of the sonic screwdriver later, the Futurekind were unable to get into the lab. Jack watched Martha go and check on Chantho. He threw an arm around the Doctor, telling him, “We need to think, now. Can you do that?” Jack would have told him that he could go to pieces later, over the loss of his TARDIS, but he could see from the Doctor’s eyes that that had already happened. The Doctor nodded, and they walked over to Martha.
“Chantho seems to be dead, boys.” Martha looked up at them, rather sadly.
“I can try a couple of things, Martha,” Jack said, bending down, and pressing a control on his wristband.
“You told me that was burnt out,” she replied.
“Only the Vortex Manipulator function.” Jack scanned Chantho. “You would not believe how many different things this does. Nowhere near as many settings as his sonic screwdriver, though. I even made my own version of that, in 2001. “ He looked up at the Doctor, who gave him a small smile, possibly of approval. “Again, not so many functions. Works like a dream, though." There was nothing. He tried his other magic trick, but the Harkness version of the kiss of life didn’t seem to work on Chantho, unfortunately. There was no glow, no spark to re-ignite. “Sorry, Blue,” Jack said, sadly.
He looked at Martha, and then pulled her close, letting her cry against his shoulder for a few minutes. They would have to leave Chantho’s body behind, there was nothing they could do for her now. Maybe once they had the TARDIS back...
“How are we getting out of here, Doctor?” she asked, when she moved out of his arms, and stood up. “We need to get back to Earth, now. That’s Mr Saxon on your ship.”
“Is his own TARDIS here?” Jack asked, standing up himself.
“I’d sense it, if it was, Jack, and I can’t sense anything, other than you.” The Doctor looked straight at him.
‘And I’m wrong,’ Jack thought.
“Defibrillators!” Martha exclaimed suddenly. “Can’t you jump start Jack’s Vortex Manipulator with the sonic screwdriver, Doctor? Can it carry more than person, Jack?” she asked them.
“Excellent idea, Martha Jones!” the Doctor said, grinning madly and grabbing Jack’s wrist. “We’ll fix this properly, later, Jack.”
“I’ve only done that a couple of times, but yeah, it can, Martha,” Jack explained. He nodded and smiled at the Doctor, watching him fire the sonic screwdriver at his wristband.
“There! See if that’s done the job, Captain.”
Jack brought up his wrist, and pressed a sequence of controls that he had last entered one hundred and thirty eight years ago. Lights that he hadn’t seen for a very long time lit up, and he smiled. “Should be good for one trip,” he announced, looking at the Doctor.
“One trip is all we need.”
Jack set the Vortex Manipulator for London, June 2008. He grabbed Martha’s and the Doctor’s hands, and they completed the little circle. The time bubble extended around them, and a portal opened. They were in the Time Vortex for a few minutes.
They were then in an alleyway, somewhere in London. Surrounded by Vote Saxon posters. Well, at least he’d got the time right.
“Still think it’s a Space Hopper?”
“Yes,” the Doctor replied.
“Do you have a plan, other than getting the TARDIS back?”
“No.”
Jack didn’t have a plan, either. How could you plan for renegade Time Lords running for election?
“We need one, Doctor. Otherwise, who knows how screwed the country’s gonna be, how screwed the world’s gonna be?”
That was enough to pull the Doctor out of himself, to get him focussing again. They found some seats, and began to talk and plan.
Saving the world really was the best job anyone could ask for. It was also the hardest, but Jack absolutely adored it.
