Heart and Mind

Finally, he’d met the man whose name he’d stolen, abused and mistreated, all because he’d needed a cover for a con, and the original time of death had been convenient.
Just a few tweaks to paperwork, and Captain Jack Harkness was still alive, instead of having burnt to death in his plane, while his men listened, helplessly.
And, gods, he was hot, brave, courageous, protective...
(Captain) Jack Harkness felt even more guilty than he ever had before.

Discovering the newspaper photo, when he and Tosh arrived back in 2008, Jack asked her to work some computer magic, and she presented him with a copy of the picture, on photographic paper.
They shared some more of Jack’s whiskey, and he wrote on the back of the photo, “Captains Jack Harkness and Dr Toshiko Sato, Kiss the Boys Goodbye Dance, January 1941.”
This was the only physical record of the event happening.
Everything else; arguing, holding hands, talking, dancing, kissing, bidding farewell, Jack held in his battered heart and mind as cherished memories.
And if he kissed a fingertip and transferred that kiss to his namesake, for as long as he wanted to, then he also kept that in those same places.
