Lovers and Friends

After she’s been ordered off the Valiant, instructed to save both herself and the world, Martha spends a year walking the Earth, telling her story. All the time, she has Jack’s Vortex Manipulator strapped to her wrist, giving her ample opportunity to discover what else it offers.
Well, apart from time travel, teleportation and various kinds of computer access.

Somewhere in France, Martha finds the hologram design and projection function. The only hologram available for display is a cylindrical object, identified as a Chula ambulance.
That night, she renders the Earth saying, “Help me, Martha Jones. You’re my only hope,” thinking it might spur her on, when she’s down.
But when she actually watches the hologram, she isn’t sure whether to laugh or cry.

It’s in Russia, in the freezing Siberian winter, that she stumbles across Jack’s list of phone numbers, his little black book.
Judging by the size of the file, it isn't so much a little black book, Martha thinks. Instead, it’s probably more like a virtual version of the entire London telephone directory.
Martha knows it's wrong, but she really can’t resist looking.
Lovers or Friends are the first two options; she selects Friends.
Rose Tyler’s in there, with a bioprint, likes, dislikes, favourite foods, favourite planets. And, of course, a deceased date now crossed out. The Doctor has two bioprints. There’s a very long list of what she assumes are Torchwood staff, with deceased dates against many of them, going all the way back to 1879.
Martha’s surprised to find herself in there, also with a bioprint, seeing as she spent mere days with Jack. She smiles at his instant loyalty, and feels much warmer.
Then she goes to investigate Lovers. Scrolling through that list takes a while. To her complete unsurprise, Martha finds men, women, humanoids, aliens…
Lurking away at the bottom of the list is a file labelled, Potential Lovers.
She discovers herself in that one as well.
God, he’s so completely shameless.
But she’s incredibly flattered.

Martha finds the strength to leave the Doctor, so she can finish her degree and get her qualification.
Months later, Dr Jones arrives on Jack’s doorstep. Having been thoroughly kissed by him, Martha then asks, “When do I get moved from Potential to Actual Lover, then?”
“Tonight?” he immediately suggests, smiling. “I need to introduce you to my people, now.”
He takes her hand, leading her out to the main area of the Hub.
“Tosh, Gwen, Ianto, Owen, this is Dr Martha Jones. She saved the world…”
