Torchwood/Doctor Who - ficlet & art - We That Are Left Grow Old, Jack/Jack, TW3, PG

I made the art first, possibly for The Torchwood Girls.

Then Jack decided to tell me he keeps his poppies, so I wrote this.

ETA: it appears the USA doesn't do the poppy thing (mainly an Empire/Commonwealth and European thing), so hellenebright (thank you :) ) explains them in the comments.

We That Are Left Grow Old
by Laura

Hidden away in a cabinet in Jack’s office is a box containing eighty seven paper poppies.

Most of them are more pink and tattered than red and creased, now, though.

Living in the slow lane, serving (and dying) in both World Wars, he’s worn a poppy every November since 1921. He’s made sure his teams do the same; he’s been taking his people to the Remembrance Day service at the Cardiff war memorial since 1928.

Yes, he knows how brave all those men and women were, what a sacrifice they’d all made. But ending up in 1941, meeting the guy he’d stolen his name from just brings it all back home, again.

So in November 2008, Captain Jack Harkness is among the several names Jack adds to his huge personal remembrance list.

Later, he adds another poppy to his box.

-end-

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
“For the Fallen” by Laurence Binyon (1869-1943)
