When Jack’s coral is four hundred it gives out a sudden burst of sentience, which he physically feels, low in his abdomen. It was such a long time ago, but he’s never going to forget being pregnant, and this feeling is like his baby moving, getting ready to be born; it makes him gasp.
At least this time, Jack has a guarantee against the baby being still-born, the sole reason he'd sworn he was 'never doing that again.'
In 2008, he unexpectedly found himself a father. So much for all his plans, then.
And not long now.

Jack managed to tell me about this, after an initial false start.

Compatibility
by Laura
In the fifty-first century, on the Earth colonies, the human body was such that anyone, female or male, could carry a child.
Jack had been barely twenty, just back from war, still missing his friend and thinking about signing up with the Time Agency. The very last thing he’d needed was getting pregnant.
By an Andromedan shapeshifter he’d picked up in a bar, whose compatibility with humans still hadn’t been proven, a fact he’d known.
Yes, he could have got rid of it, and one tiny capsule would have done the trick.
But he’d just spent three years watching young men and women being blasted away; he was aware of how very precious life actually was, so he’d forced himself to get used to the idea.
Soon, he’d found he liked the idea.
When the time came, and his baby had moved into position, getting ready to be born, the feeling had made him gasp. He’d had the operation, and then watched the medics’ faces fall, as they’d examined the child.
“What’s wrong?” he’d tried asking.
“I’m very sorry,” one of the doctors had eventually told him, as another sealed the cut in his abdomen.

Later, cradling his still-born, half-human daughter against his chest, he’d stroked her hair and sworn he was never doing this again.
If he did, he’d make sure his partner was actually compatible.
But if he joined the Time Agency, the possibility would be removed for him. And with it removed, he was completely free to have sex with whoever, or whatever he liked.
That idea was something he’d adored, and he’d smiled through his tears, as he’d kissed his Emma goodbye.
