Diversionary Tactics

It should have been a standard shopping trip for TARDIS parts. Yeah, right. As if standard ever applied where the three of them were concerned. So, there they were, at the Zoica Market, and about to make their last purchase, a rather fantastic lever.

“Ma’am,” Jack said to the green-skinned humanoid female with purple hair, "you have some beautiful pieces here."

“Thank you, sir,” the woman said, but it was toneless.

The Doctor and Rose both rolled their eyes at him, and the Time Lord made a “get on with it, Captain” gesture. Jack vaguely saluted him, and got another eye roll.

The store keeper was pretty, so he gave her the smile; too white, too many teeth. His not-so-secret-weapon. “This lever, ma’am, are you sure you can’t give us a better price than the one you have listed on the label?”

“The price is the price, sir.” And that wasn’t toneless.

Damn. It was usually much easier than this. He could feel the Doctor trying not to laugh at him. Jack turned and just whispered, “Well, you try, then.”

“Yeah, Captain,” he replied, with a manic grin.

Jack loved that grin.

“Hello, Kasia,” the Doctor said, and the woman did not protest that she hadn’t given them her name. “Y’sure you can’t let us have the lever for less?”

Jack listened to the Doctor haggle and bargain, but Kasia wasn’t going to budge. Doctor, just take the lever, so we can go! he thought to himself.

Well, mostly. Because Jack then received in his mind, Create a diversion, then, Captain.

That was new. Somehow, Jack managed not to mentally blink. What do you suggest, Doctor? he replied, Agency psychic training coming back to him.

Entirely up to you, Jack.

Really shouldn’t say things like that around me.

Grinning, Jack turned to Rose, placing his lips next to her ear. She shivered a little, and his grin grew much wider. “Sweetheart,” he whispered, “Would you mind terribly if I kissed you, right now?”

Rose just shivered a lot, faintly saying, “God, no, Jack.”

Taking that as consent, he looked her in the eyes, cupped her face in his hands, licked her lips open and proceeded to stroke Rose's tongue with his.

That diversion enough? he asked the Doctor, with a bit of his brain that was free. The rest of it was busy kissing Rose, feeling her melt against him.

Yeah. Mrs Green here is just staring at the pair of you.

But there was something like anger in there.

Take the damn thing, now, then.

And there was something like assent in the reply Jack then received.

“Jack, put Rose down, and let’s go,” the Doctor shortly said, with the lever. All three of them held hands, and they ran back to the TARDIS.

Later, there were glares. About what, Jack couldn’t figure out.

“It worked, didn’t it?” he said, as they stood in the control room.

“Yeah,” the Doctor admitted, all gruff Manchester accent and battered leather jacket.

“Well, just fit it, and stop worrying, then. I’m sure the old girl doesn’t mind how we got it, only that we did,” Jack replied. Feeling mischievous, he asked, “Next time we need a distraction, is it alright if I kiss you?”

“As long as you’ve bought me a drink by then, Jack.”

“If I buy you two, what can I do?” He thought of several things they could do together.

Well, one thing.

“Not that, for a start.” The Doctor tapped his head.

“Spoilsport. Now, are we installing this part or not, then?”

“We’re installing this part. D’you want to help?”

“I’d rather watch,” Jack said, because he loved seeing the Doctor work on his beautiful ship. Smiling, he anticipated the next time he would get to kiss either one of his friends.

He didn’t mind which.

Both at the same time would be even better.
