Part 1 Branches, Part 2
by Laura
The next morning, Tosh is checking the logs. She notes a suspicious peak in activity, last night, in both the Rift Manipulator and the organic computer. Displaying the read-outs as graphs, she’s very intrigued.
These are computers, she reminds herself.
But somehow, judging by the shape of the graphs, the slow climb, the slow dropping off, they may well have experienced something not entirely unlike sex. It shouldn’t make sense, but it does. Because this is Torchwood, and the computers are alive.
Still, she’d better tell Jack what she’s discovered. Printing off the graphs, she goes to speak to him.

“Jack?”
“Hey, Tosh. What’s up?” He looks up from his desk, gestures for her to take a seat.
“I’m not sure quite how to put this, Jack,” she says, sitting, giving him some charts, “but last night, I think our computers had sex with each other. Please tell me that doesn’t sound completely ridiculous.”
Jack looks at the charts, and yeah, rise and fall. She is perfectly right, but he wants to hear how she worked it out. “Why do think that’s what happened, Tosh?”
“Strange peak in the activity logs. And the graphs I produced from them, the climb and the drop.”
“Did you find a sound file of some purring, Tosh?”
“Purring?”
“Yeah, purring. That’s what the aroused, telepathic and sentient time/space stuff we’ve got built into our system does, y’know.”
“I’m right, then?” she asks, wide-eyed.
“Yeah, you’re right,” he says, and watches her grin. “This is Torchwood, remember, home of the weird and strange.” It was only a matter of hours ago, and the coral on Jack’s desk is still purring just a little, under her general hum. “Maybe you don’t need that file. Give me your hand, please, Tosh.”

Tosh puts her hand in Jack’s; he places it on the piece of coral that takes pride of place on his desk.
“Listen to her, Tosh,” he says.
“Listen?”
“Yeah. She’s sentient as well, and telepathic. I know for a fact that she joined in.” Jack grins.
Tosh shakes her head a little, chuckling, then closes her eyes, focuses. There’s a hum, yes, and a vague purring. “I hear her, Jack,” she says, smiling. Opening her eyes, she asks, “What is she?”
“A child,” he says. “A kid with a hell of a lot of growing up to do.”
That’s typical Jack, pretty vague. “But you’re taking care of her?” Tosh carefully asks, taking her hand away from the coral.
“Oh, yeah.” He smiles happily, passes back the charts. “Got anything else for me?”
“Not at the moment.” She rises from her chair, heads for the door.
“Tosh?” Jack says, with a wicked little tone in his voice. She turns back to look at him. “Why don’t you see if you can persuade the organic computer and the Rift Manipulator to let you join in, the next time they make love?”
She briefly considers scolding her captain, then thinks, ‘Why not?’ “Would they let me, do you think?”
“I think they’d be delighted that you’d want to experience something like that.”
He’s not finished, she can see that. “And...?”
“It’s a hell of a rush, Tosh, I can tell you that, for sure.” He smiles at her.
Tosh grins back, and leaves Jack’s office, thinking about how she’s going to arouse her machines. Home of the weird and strange, oh, yes, but none of them would have it any other way.
This is where they want to be, saving the world is what they want to do.
