The massive creature is sentient, amazingly, and thanks to the hole in its side, quite clearly in a hell of a lot of pain.
“What have they done to you, my poor friend?” Jack asks, but the question is practically rhetorical.
In his head, a Manchester accent says, “Stupid bloody apes,” and looms ominously.
Then a London one says, “Humans,” and shakes his head, disappointed.
“Yeah,” Jack silently agrees, as the whale-like animal again voices its pain.
Welcome to planet Earth, indeed. “We’ll get you out of this,” he promises the creature, and gently rubs its side, offering some much needed comfort.
Just how the hell they’re actually going to do that is another matter.

Dale and his associates obviously have no idea what it is they’re carving up, and don’t want to listen to a word he says. Before Jack and his team know it, the creature’s loose and Rhys is down. Then Owen appears, with a large hypodermic needle.
“Mercy killing,” he says, when Jack asks him about the injections.
The drugs only make the creature cry even more.
Jack moves nearer to the animal, standing by its huge eye, letting it see him, again stroking its skin. He also reaches out with both his mind and his emotions, using the telepathic and empathic abilities he possesses, courtesy of being a fifty-first century human. Jack senses the creature’s pain; feels its heart and lungs stop working.
“I’m so sorry,” Owen says, as he and Tosh stand close as well.
They lost this one, and it hurts like hell.
