Love Is The Drug
by Laura

Leaving his people in the board room, retconned and sleeping, Jack walked back to the cells. On the way, he needed to think about something other than what Adam had done to them, how he had torn them apart.

So he thought about when the Screen had arrived.

In June 1967.

The Summer of Love was probably not the most appropriate time for a giant, pattern-generating screen to be set up.

Dr Melanie Hooper was the engineer from Torchwood One who usually delivered the new equipment to Cardiff. A tall brunette, hair to her waist and really hot; she and Jack had slept together on more than one occasion. Dr Hooper had brought the Screen and carried out its installation. When she’d switched the thing on, Melanie had asked him, “What the hell are they thinking, Jack?”

“No idea, Mel,” he’d replied, watching the patterns and colours swirl. “I wonder...”

“Jack?” Melanie had been concerned at his tone of voice.

“I scored some of the good stuff three days ago, Mel,” Jack had informed her. He’d scored considerably better stuff, but that was a lifetime ago, on a planet about three galaxies away. He'd slung an arm around her shoulders, pulled her close and kissed her lips. “Do you wanna see what happens?”

“Oh, why on Earth not, Captain,” she’d eventually said. “We're not the first and we certainly won’t be the last people to play with these screens.”

The two of them had spent that night high on LSD, and staring at the pretty patterns. Jack had taken Mel to bed, just to sleep, and the following morning, they’d made love.

God, he’d been so incredibly happy.

And now, like then, love was the dominant force. Jack felt nothing, when he looked at Adam; no warmth, no pride.

No love.

After he’d seen the CCTV, and talked Ianto down, that was the trigger, the note his heart gave him that something might be wrong.

Jack could only hope that his hunch had been right, and that his love for his team would help send this destructive interloper back where he’d come from. There’d be a price to pay, though. There always was, in situations like this.

And if it was high, Jack would just have to live with it.
