When Torchwood wake him up in June 1940, Captain Harkness isn’t there. And he hadn’t said he wouldn’t be, the last time they woke him. At least the doctor’s the same as last time: a pretty, dark-haired woman, Dr Elizabeth Wainwright.
“Where’s Jack?” Tommy asks her, late morning. They’re in the medical bay, doing some tests. She hesitates, but he can tell from her expression what she wants to say. “There’s another bloody war on, isn’t there?”
“Yes, Tommy. I'm afraid there is,” she says, with a sigh. “Jack said he’d see you again in a few years’ time.”
“When's a few years’ time, Dr Wainwright? Jack probably said. It’s not like I’ve anyone to tell, is it?
“1945, he told me.”
“Worse than last time, then,” Tommy says.
“Apparently so,” Elizabeth replies.
What a bloody mess. Did the last one actually achieve anything at all?

In 1945, Jack’s expression is even more resigned than it was in 1919. “This one’s not over yet, is it?” Tommy asks, sat opposite Jack, in a pub.
“Not quite,” Jack replies. He then talks about the VE Day celebrations, back in May, and brightens, just a little.
“Wish I’d been awake to see all that.”
“C’mon, then,” Jack says, rising from his seat. “Let’s go back to the Hub and find you some pictures, Private Tommy Brockless. Some light in this darkness. Goodness knows we need it.”
“Yeah,” Tommy agrees, following him.
