Hide Your Love Away
by Laura

London, February 1941

Jack’s once again spinning Estelle around the dancefloor of the Astoria; they’re jiving to Glenn Miller’s In The Mood. They’re happy, and smiling at each other.

But then the all too familiar screaming whine of the air raid sirens sounds. Seconds after that, the band stops playing. And as the crowd stops dancing, everybody’s faces fall. Jack pulls Estelle into his arms, embracing her, kissing her hair.

“Ladies and gentlemen, could you please make your way to the basement --"

“-- Until the all-clear sounds,” Jack parrots, along with the girl making the announcement, whispering the words. “We know what to do by now, huh, sweetheart?” he adds, looking down at Estelle.

He’s trying to force a smile, but it’s difficult, when he’s so terrified. It’s been just over seventy years since he was last in the middle of World War II, but Jack's never forgotten just how frightening this all was. They’d be safer in the Underground, it’s true, but there isn’t time to get to a station. So, once again, to the sound of sirens, rather than music, the dancers descend to the lower levels of the Astoria.

“Yes. Basement will have to be enough, Jack,” she says, with a similarly fake smile, and takes his hand.

Jack and Estelle find a quiet corner. He presses her up against the wall, arms cushioning her, trying to stop too much brick dust getting on her dress. “The usual, Estelle?” he asks her.

“Oh, yes, Jack,” his beautiful girl replies.

“You got it, sweetheart.”

Once more, they kiss, pretend they’re elsewhere, try to forget about the bombs falling from the sky. The band soon starts playing, so they can dance, as well.

It’s not all bad, Jack realises, yet again. But he breathes a sigh of huge relief when the all-clear sounds, and they can return upstairs. He leads Estelle back to the floor, and they dance, dance, dance.
