Tread Softly
by Laura
“Humans. Always primpin’ an’ preenin’, you lot,” came a voice from his doorway. “No wonder it takes you so long to get around to anything.”
Gelling his hair, he ought to be offended at that, Jack considered. Instead, he just grinned at his self-admittedly hot reflection, before looking away from the full length mirror and facing the Doctor. “And I figured I was good at sneaking up on people. You, though…” Jack shook his head; he couldn’t compete with the guy, not in this game.
“Had nine hundred years of practice, me, Captain.” Arms folded, he leant against the wall of Jack’s room. The Time Lord stalked back to the door with, “Right. When you’re finished tartin’ yourself up, lad, you can come an’ give me a hand. Old girl’s dimensional stabilisers’ve gone wrong. Again.” Then he vanished as quietly as he’d appeared.
“Sir,” Jack whispered, saluting the space where the Doctor had just been.
Turning back to the mirror, he smiled, ‘finished tarting himself up’, for Rose, the Doctor and the TARDIS. Just because the ship didn’t have eyes, didn’t mean she couldn’t see him. Standing in his doorway, Jack gently stroked her wall, ran a finger around a hexagon or two. No ears didn’t mean she couldn’t hear him, either. “Don’t you worry, beautiful,” he said, softly, “Your Doc and Captain’ll soon have your engines revving again.”
With the TARDIS perfectly obviously telepathically rolling her eyes at him, Jack headed off to the console room, and the Doctor.
