I'll Always Be There, As Frightened As You
by Laura
It’d been too close. Again. Like it always was. Too close, too many times, with too many friends. He’d just been so very alone; he really didn’t fancy doing it again, just yet.
There were male footsteps, followed by: “You done with today’s brooding, yet, Doc?”
The Doctor looked up at Jack, briefly, glaring just a little. The man shrugged, grinned at him, despite the look he was getting, then joined him on the console room’s floor, leaning against the same coral branch.
“See, the way I figure it, all three of us are still alive, despite today’s little adventure.”
“Everybody lives, Captain,” the Doctor replied, but it was rather sarcastic, and didn’t have very much hope in it.
“Yeah. Exactly. Okay, we cut it kinda close.” Jack chuckled.
“Kinda? You sure ‘bout that?”
“Yeah. Just kinda. We’re all still here, Doctor. C’mon, look at me.” Jack’s voice had turned serious, the Doctor did as requested. “You don’t need to be a soldier all the time.”
“Who says I’m a soldier any of the time, Captain?” he asked, eyebrows raised, at Jack’s apparent change in tactics.
“Me,” Jack replied. He hadn’t told him, but Jack had seen. The guy was smarter than he’d given him credit for, something he’d realised about three days after saving him. Jack shook his head, before saying, “Thought you were teaching me how to live a little better. Didn’t really figure I’d have to be teaching you, as well.”
They’d all taught him that, every single one of them.
Jack continued, “Y’know, maybe we could both stop being soldiers, once in a while.”
He had a point, the Doctor had to admit. “We could. Well, we could try, at least,” he allowed.
Jack nodded in agreement. “It’d make Rose happy, that’s for sure. She hates it when we’re both stompin’ around in here.”
“Yeah, she does.”
“So, a little less brooding, a little more living? Not that the brooding isn’t really hot, sometimes.”
The Doctor rolled his eyes at Jack’s words, yet again. One track mind. “I can try, Captain. That’s the best I can offer.”
“Good man. I’ll do the same.” Jack stood, pulling the Doctor up with him. “Tea?”
“Tea,” he agreed, letting Jack keep hold of his hand as they made their way to the kitchen. He’d been right to bring this human on board.
Good man, Jack Harkness, the Doctor echoed.
